Bangalore Linux Users' Group - Focus, Fun, Decorum: The Code Breakers - Documentary on FOSS being aired in May on BBC World

Microsoft has dominated the world of computing for many years, with its heavily guarded ‘code’ being beyond reach to many in the developing nations. In some of the poorest countries the cost of upgrading an operating system to keep up with the rest o fthe world amounts to a year's wages, and there are few legitimate options. In Thailand for example, 95 percent of software on computers is pirated. The poorest countries are now beginning to use free or open source software (FOSS), a software that parallels many of Microsoft's programmes but with the major difference being that they are distributed free of charge and can be altered by computer programmers who are allowed unfettered access to the 'source code'. In this two-part documentary, Code Breakers includes stories and interviews from around the world where FOSS is making an impact, from disaster management in Sri Lanka to tortoise breeding programmes in the Galapagos.

BBC Will be airing `The Code Breakers' in 2 parts at the following schedule (is in Indian time)

Bangalore Linux Users' Group - Focus, Fun, Decorum: April meet

We met on April 29th at the HP office on Lavelle Road. A bunch of us turned up on time and had to wait for Praveen to sign us in. He arrived in a minute and we all moved up to the conference room. Shreyas - one of the speakers - was the first person there.

While we sat and inspected the place, others trickled in. Atul, Kaustubh, Sony, Gopi, Tejas, Mahendra and others turned up shortly.

The meet started with Atul responding to allegations made against him on http://www.kingsly.net/kingsly/Linux/bangalore/no-blug/

Notes of Atul's response will be uploaded in a following post.

After Atul's response, Praveen asked why the name foss.in was chosen for the conference. His contention was that colleges around India were trying to emulate it by naming their conferences similarly, eg: FOSS.MCC, FOSS.NITC, but all of them were missing the point about FOSS, identifying FOSS with a conference rather than the concept of Free and OpenSource Software. He said that when he asks people what they're doing in FOSS, they don't understand why he's asking them about a conference, when he really meant software.

A discussion ensued with most parties not understanding what Praveen meant, and Praveen trying to explain what he meant. The end resolution was that this is how things will start, and as people get exposed more to these conferences, their participation in FOSS will increase.

The discussion was cut short by Arvind who wanted the technical talks to start. He was hoping for the talk on FreeBSD, but Shanker Balan, who was supposed to give the talk wasn't present (he was allegedly watching a movie).

Pankaj Kaushal who was supposed to speak on my first KDE application could not make it to the meet as he was stuck at work. Sony Philip and Tejas Dinkar were not keen to deliver their talks either.

After some coaxing, Shreyas and Kaustubh agreed to explain the technology behind [infinity radio | http://infinityradio.info]. They gave a short talk about the software used and how they went about doing things. They were unable to explain the actual streaming technology, and Atul explained that. Arvind and I wanted to know what the difference between this kind of streaming and multicast was, and Gopi explained the same. Multicast is more efficient in terms of bandwidth usage, but is harder to set up.

One open question is how would streaming using bittorrent over multicast would work.

There was some fiddling around to get a media player work with HP's proxy until Sony told us where the pref in XMMS was. We then listened to infinity radio while some of the guys tried to get wireless working with Network Manager. Mahendra helped out.

The meet ended here with some members stopping off at Airlines hotel for the most expensive idlis ever - 10 bucks a piece.

Bangalore Linux Users' Group - Focus, Fun, Decorum: March BLUG Meet Minutes - BLUG Idol style

Hi,

The Bangalore Linux Users' Group had its March Meet on Saturday, 25th March, at the HP Office, Infantry Road. The Meet wasn't held at the Marigold Conference Room as there was some training going on for some HP employees. So we were given the Madhuvanti Conference Room instead in the 5th floor. The Madhuvanti Conference room is pretty compact and comfortable. It was big enough to accommodate all the people who attended.

This meet was definitely different from all the meets that we have had so far. Its something that we have tried for the first time. Well, if you have been following the Indian Idol contest on Sony TV, then it was something like that. As the BLUG is visiting various Colleges to spread the word of FOSS, we have started conducting a train the speakers programme for potential speakers who would be interested to speak at various Colleges. This is the perfect time to conduct such meets as its the summer vacation at the Colleges after the exams and gives us sufficient time to prepare until the new academic year starts in about 2 months time.

So the people who walked the plank on Saturday were Neeldhara Misra from Mount Carmel College, Tejas Dinkar from PESIT, Mahendra from Infosys and Sheela from PESIT. Neel took the stage first. BTW, each speaker was given 15 minutes to speak after which there was 15 minutes of constructive criticism for the speaker. So Neel spoke on Firefox and why we should use it. It was a pretty neat talk and covered the reasons why we should use Firefox. Next, it was Tejas who made an attempt to enlighten the audience about FC5 which was released very recently, I guess just last week on Wednesday. Tejas explained some of the new things included in FC5. After he finished his talk, Tejas was told on how he should cultivate a trick if he forgot his slides by looking at the screen and trying to emphasise on a point. Apart from that, emphasising on some of the new features of FC5 is what he must concentrate on.

Then was the turn of the seasoned Mahendra who spoke on the GNOME Network Manager and new power management features in FC5. Mahendra even demoed some of the features during the course of his talk. Next after Mahendra, Sheela from PESIT took the stage and started a BoF session on what Linux is not. It was more of a rant session on why there is not much adoption of Linux on the desktop. The major reason pointed out during the discussion was primarily because of lack of availability of games and music related software. This is something which was admitted by the majority of the audience.

So we had 4 speakers during this Meet. Before we dispersed from the Meet, the date for the next meet was fixed which will happen on the 29th of April. Most of the participants would also be participating in Barcamp which would be held on 22nd of April. Atul also gave a shout out to the attendees that he is looking for some volunteers to manage the mailing lists for the BLUG and propose some new names for them as well. Everyone dispersed by 8 pm.

That is all for this meet folks ! See you all next time for the April Meet which will be held on the 29th of April. Until then, may the FOSS be with you !
